Second quarter stampede

The second quarter decided the contest Friday, as Burkeville beat Goodrich 61-30.

With the score tied at 13 in the second period, the Hornets had started the game well. Seeking their first win of the 2024-25 season, they had played good zone defense, and rebounded well after the shot.

However, things fell apart quickly. The Mustangs began to shoot the ball better, which opened up lanes to the rim. Meanwhile, the Hornets went silent on the offensive end. A 21-0 run concluded the first half, with the ‘Stangs connecting on a half-court shot at the buzzer.

“We started off playing well, but we started getting out of our game,” Hornet coach Lester King said. “Sometimes, kids will listen and then think, ‘I can play and do what I want to do now. I can take a bad shot or throw the ball away.’ We gave them 21 points in the second quarter. We were tied 7-7 in the first quarter and then looked up at halftime and it was 21 points (difference).”

The 25-point outburst in the second period would just about cement the game. The home team was outscored in each of the final three periods.

Joshua James led the Hornets with 11 points. He was supported by Eliseo Garzon with eight, Zatavius Bowens with six and Sky Wrightson five.

Goodrich will have Leggett, Brookeland and then High Island to close the season.

“We had a good quarter, and we need to keep thinking and keep working and hopefully in the future it will get better.”
