TYLER COUNTY – A wave of bad weather washed through the region last week, with a tornado touching down in Tyler County on Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, an EF-1 tornado touched down on Tuesday morning, before 10 a.m., about five miles northwest of Woodville, according to the NWS. The tornado, which is being referred to by NWS as “Little Cypress Creek Tornado,” is reported to have had a wind speed peak of 95 mph and spread over a little over a half-mile before it touched down. It began about a half-mile west of US 287.

A damage survey showed where the tornado was on the ground from about 9:49 a.m. until 9:52 a.m., and damaged several trees and some outbuildings, according to the NWS.

Several of the damaged trees were large pines that were snapped at the trunk. It moved northeast, and damaged a home and destroyed an outbuilding.

Due to the severity of the weather last week, Tyler County Judge Milton Powers declared a local state of disaster for the county, citing the torrential rainfall and high winds, as well as other severe weather. He issued the declaration last Tuesday.

That state of disaster is set to remain in place for seven days, unless it is renewed.
