Shooting to stay in contention

Accurate shooting and solid defense allowed Big Sandy basketball to pick up their second district win Friday, doubling up Deweyville 76-38.

The contest was decided by halftime, as the Wildcats scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters. Deweyville managed just 13 points for the half.

“This is the best that we have shot all year long,” Wildcat coach Dalton Flowers said. “I think we hit 12 threes, so I was real impressed with that. We haven't played in a week, so we had fresh legs. We missed a few days because of the snowstorm. We were supposed to play (Thursday) against Sabine Pass, but they were out of school.”

The Wildcats weren’t done, saving their best for the third quarter with 22 points. For the contest, Naki Thompson scored 19, Jasper Hardy had 17, Shuday Beene-Williams 12 and Jamesley Flowers 10.

“We shared the ball really well and I'll have to look at the numbers later in the film, but I think we had over 15 assists on made buckets tonight,” Flowers said.

In district play, Big Sandy is 2-3, with a 14-13 overall record. They were defeated Saturday 49-41 by Sabine Pass in a game that was postponed during the snowstorm. Evadale currently sits in first place, while Sabine Pass and West Hardin are close behind. Big Sandy is hanging onto fourth place.

With the Sabine Pass game moved, Big Sandy has three games in five days. Two of those are versus the top half of the district in Sabine Pass and West Hardin. Both of those are on the road.

“I told the boys to rest up tonight and that's why we played a little bit of zone,” Flowers said. We usually don't. I wanted to try to conserve our legs a little bit.”

The Wildcats have that trip to Saratoga to take on the Oilers Tuesday.
