Tigers pull off impressive homecoming win

TRINITY — The Tiger offense was running on all cylinders, posting scores with a minimum of plays in the 49-12 win over Warren on Friday.

The win moves the team to 5-2 overall and a 1-2 district record.

The Tigers had to wait two weeks to get redemption for their loss to Kountze as they celebrated homecoming and returned to the win column, strangely enough by the same score of their loss.

After a few roster and positional changes, the Tigers were ready to take the field against the Warren Warriors.

The Warriors received the opening kick and made one first down before being forced to punt; fortunately for the Tigers the punt was short and set the offense up on the Warrior 37-yard line. On the first play, Ayden DuBose took the ball 37 yards for the first score of the game. The Warriors were unable to gain any traction on their next possession, but a muffed punt reception by the Tigers set the stage for a scoring opportunity for the Warriors. The Tiger defense stood strong and forced a fumble on the 14-yard line. As the first quarter came to a close, Turbo Maxie was able to break free for a 50-yard run into the Warrior end of the field.

After a Tiger holding call, the second quarter started with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Maxie to Brady Arnold and gave the Tigers a 14-0 lead. The Warriors were able to put together a touchdown drive on their next possession and tighten the game to 14-6. The Tigers wasted no time in adding to their lead, as Maxie found Jonathan Baker open for what appeared to be a short gain, ended up as a 73-yard touchdown for the Tigers and a 21-6 lead.

The Warriors’ next possession ended with an interception by Corde Walker. After an incomplete pass, Maxie broke free for a 54-yard scoring run. The Tigers gave Homecoming King and center Jayden Alexander an opportunity to shine as he lined up in the backfield and took the direct snap into the end zone for the 2-points and a 29-6 halftime lead.

The Tigers took the opening kick of the third quarter and on the second play, Maxie found Walker open for a 47-yard touchdown pass and a commanding 37-6 lead. The Warriors’ woes continued as they fumbled the ball on the Tiger 36-yard line and after a Tiger penalty and a short gain, DuBose took the handoff and did not stop until the end zone for a 63-yard touchdown.

The Warriors were able to open the fourth quarter with a scoring drive, but Maxie was able to find Cove Copley open on their next drive for a 48-yard touchdown. Fortunately for the Warriors, the Tigers got the ball back as time was expiring in the game and they opted not to run another offensive play and took a 49-12 homecoming victory.

The Tigers ended the evening with just 14 total plays on offense but were able to amass 248 rushing yards, highlighted by DuBose with 2 touchdowns and 129 yards on 5 attempts. Maxie completed 4 passes to 4 different receivers for 4 touchdowns and 205 total yards.

The Tigers will take their longest trip of the season Friday to Newton to challenge the state-ranked and district favorite Newton Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
