Trinity Tigers win big over 4A Rusk

TRINITY — The Tigers put out maximum effort in their win over Rusk, a 4A team, on Dec. 10.

Coach Colton Jackson said the team guys played insanely hard, having to overcome a 3 ½-quarter deficit by locking the Eagles down on defense.

Top scorers were Ayden Debose with 19 points, Chanston Holland with 12 points, Terian Maxie with 13 points, Cordé Walker with 8 points, Darryn Bass with 7 points, and Jammale Johnson with 2.

Over the weekend, the Tigers pulled off a first-place win at the R.B. Moffett Tournament in Colmesneil by winning four-straight games.

The Tigers opened with an 84-46 win over Leggett on Thursday, then a 90-6 win over Goodrich. On Friday, Trinity had a 55-21 win over Hull-Daisetta, and then on Saturday, Trinity downed Big Sandy 51-41

Centerville

The Centerville Bulldogs competed in the Gary Tournament, going 2-2 over the weekend of play.

The Bulldogs opened play with a 65-37 win over Elysian Fields. Jake Slaten put up 25 points, while Iain Kendrick added 17 and Kolt Larsen made 13.

On Friday, the Bulldogs took on the defending 2A state finalists and No. 9-ranked Shelbyville Dragons, coming up short 63-54 for the team’s first loss of the season. Slaten led scoring with 24 and added 14 rebounds.

Centerville then downed the 2A No. 14-ranked Beckville Bearcats by a score of 59-54. Slaten had 29 points and 13 rebounds, and Larsen added 13 points.

Centerville then faced Pleasant Grove, a 4A team, on Saturday and lost 79-54. Kendrick led scoring with 17, followed by Slaten with 12 and Larsen with 11. Kendrick also had 17 rebounds to Slaten’s 10 and Larsen’s 14.

The Bulldogs will open district play on Tuesday against Laneville with a record of 13-2 on the season.

Groveton

The Indians went 2-2 at the Colmesneil tournament, losing 46-35 to Hull-Daisetta and 55-53 to Leggett, but winning 46-45 over Colmesneil and 55-16 over Goodrich.

Against Hull-Daisetta, Ruger McLain led the offense with 11 points, while Josiah Allen pulled in 13 boards.

Against Goodrich, Allen had a monster 24 points and 19 rebounds to lead the team.

Against Colmesneil, McLain had the hot hand with 14 points, followed by George Snyder with 11. Ty Torregrossa added 12 rebounds.

Against Leggett, Snyder put up 21 points to lead scoring, while Allen added 14 points and 24 rebounds.

On Dec. 10, Groveton downed Zavalla 37-33. Allen tossed up 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the effort.

Apple Springs

The Eagles went 2-1 at the Colmesneil tournament last week, losing 43-33 to Spurger but beating Chester 59-54 and downing Colmesneil 65-50.

Girls
Centerville

The Lady Bulldogs Girls competed in the Colmesneil tournament over the weekend, posting their first win of the season with a 35-21 win over Goodrich. Centerville lost the next game to Big Sandy 44-12.

On Friday, the Lady Dawgs picked up their second win of the season with a 24-21 win over Hull-Daisetta.

The Lady Dawgs came up short both games on Saturday, losing to Corrigan and a rematch with Goodrich.

Lady Dawgs will resume district play with a record of 2-8 on the season.

Groveton

The Lady Indians played their first district game in Normangee and won 41-37. Leading scorers were Kayleigh Albus with 15, Lauren Moore with 6, Laney Peterson with 6, Marie Gonzalez with 6 and Tira Terrell with 6.

Over the weekend, Groveton participated in the R.B. Moffett Tournament in Colmesneil. In the first round, the Lady Indians downed Spurger 41-3. Scorers were Kayleigh Albus with 9, Summer Morris, Kady Lee, and Aubrey Alexander all with 6 apiece.

Following that game, Groveton won over Apple Springs 53-9. Leading scorers were Marie Gonzalez with 14, Kady Lee with 11, Darbi Parker and Laney Peterson with 8 apiece.

Then Groveton defeated Latexo 52-40. Leading scorers were Marie Gonzalez with 14, Laney Peterson with 10, and Kayleigh Albus with 7.

The Lady Indians lost to Big Sandy in the championship game 50-17. Leading scorers were Laney Peterson with 6, Lauren Moore with 3, and Darbi Parker, Tira Terrell, and Aubrey Alexander with 2. Laney Peterson and Marie Gonzalez were named to the all-tournament team.

Trinity

The Lady Tigers went 3-2 in the Leon Tournament over the weekend, claiming second overall.

On Thursday, Trinity beat Cross Roads 49-39. Top scorers were Olivia Mills with 12 and Ariah English with 11. Then, the Lady Tigers beat the Australian Team 2 39-35. Top scorer was Bree Davidson.

On Friday in the battle of the Tigers, Trinity downed Centerville 64-25. Mills had 16 points, while Davidson and Mariah Tyson each contributed 12. Then, Trinity lost to Buffalo 30-20. Davidson topped scores with 8.

On Saturday, the Lady Tigers lost to Leon 68-25. Tyson put up 16 points in the effort.
