APPLE SPRINGS — an old, abandoned home in the eastern part of the county was destroyed after a fire broke out Saturday evening.
Fire Chief Brett Selman said that the old wood frame house on FM 233, which he estimated to be 50-plus years old, was destroyed by the fire. He said the cause of the fire was electrical, possibly caused by rats chewing the wires.
Selman also said that there were no injuries, and he thanked the Lord that the west wind that was blowing that night kept the house from catching fire.
He extended his thanks to the Groveton, Trinity and Kennard fire departments that assisted in battling the blaze, and also thanked the witness, who was working in the area for Houston County Electric, for stopping and notifying emergency personnel.
•On Thursday, a fire on Horn Road left a home destroyed.
Groveton Fire Chief Glenn Hammond said they received the call about 7:30 p.m., and after arriving on the scene, called for mutual aid from Trinity and Apple Springs fire departments.
He said the structure was heavily damaged and possibly caused by a wood-burning stove. However, no injuries were reported.
Firefighters took about two hours to mop up the blaze, he said.
