Business a usual at the new library location

Posted

The library is running at full speed and so is your librarian. We have had at least 10 patrons in the library every day since the opening. We still have a few minor adjustments to the building, but we are here to stay. Thank you Groveton for your support.

• On March 28 we had Mrs. Becky Fleck to teach the children how to make greeting cards. We had 9 children in attendance and about that many adults. So much fun.

• The library is working to interview and record as many oral histories of our local people as we can get. The goal of the interviews is to create a platform to present these oral stories. The project will be called “Voices of the Everyday Awesome.” The interviews will be based on the question of “How did you get to Groveton?” The interviews usually take 30 minutes.

We would like to include your story in our history. The interviews will take place on Friday, April 11, and Friday, April 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. Please call the library at (936) 642-2483 between 1 and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday to make an appointment for your special timeslot.

• The library will be closed on Friday, April 18, in honor of Good Friday and there will be no activity on that day. We will have activities every Friday in May except May 23. Your library will be closed on Friday, May 23 and we will be closed on Monday, May 26, in honor of Memorial Day.

• The Summer Reading Program starts Monday, June 2, and will continue through July 31. We will send flyers out to families in May. We are still asking for penny donations to help with supplies and the activities for our summer program.

• A few items were donated for a raffle by Carol Dennis, a local author. She was instrumental in helping our library with book shelves and science fiction books. Carol and her husband were both science fiction authors and we have many of their books in our library. They both passed away last year.

The items that were donated are a Flambro Musical Kaleidoscope Scene at a value of $150; Volumes 1-7 of the “Harry Potter” series in paperback with the approximate value of $80; large “Holy Bible Thomas Kinkade Painter of Light” valued at $40; A commemorative Set of 12 Best Loved Books of The Golden Books 75 Years 1942-2017 at a value of $30; and a “Time Life Goes to the Movies” book in a suede cover valued at $10.

We have a copy of the “Journey to Jubilee, Groveton, Texas” that has been donated by Randall W. Connell from Dickinson at a value of $50. These raffle items will be on display in the library and the tickets will be sold for $3 each or two for $5. The drawing will be held at the Library Christmas Open House on Dec. 12. Please support your library and purchase some raffle tickets.
