GROVETON — The city of Groveton is on its way to a better water system.

At the July 25 meeting of the Groveton City Council, members approved a recommendation from its grant administrators, Schaumberg & Polk, to construct a second 80,000-gallon ground storage tank next to its existing tank.

City Secretary Dorrie Cotton said that the council accepted a bid from Horton Excavating for $377,869 for the tank, which will be built on land the city owns next to existing tank.

In a related matter, the council opted to seek bids for construction of a cover for its connection with the Pennington water system, which supplies the city with water. Council members expressed concerns that the area was open to the elements.

In other business, council members:

  • hired a part-time maintainer operator;
  • discussed the monthly report from Inframark on water and wastewater operations
  • discussed a concern regarding mobile homes on Highway 287, which the city will take no action over since the matter must be handled in civil court;
  • tabled replacement of bottled water to seek additional bids; and
  • tabled awarding bids for new roof on City Hall to seek new bids.

At a special meeting on Wednesday, the council to discuss replacing City Secretary Dorrie Cotton, who is resigning. No action because there wasn’t a quorum.
