Council holds hearing on new truck stop

GROVETON — A proposed truck stop center to be built on Highway 94 at FM 3154 was the subject of a public hearing held Sept. 15 by the Groveton City Council, and residents questioned taxes, speed limits and whether the city infrastructure could handle the extra load.

Mayor Hayden Lee said the council’s intention was to annex that land into the city limits for the Fly Investment Group.

Groveton resident Betsy Wood asked if the city was able to provide city services to the truck stop without causing any problems with current water and sewer lines and asked if a tax abatement was given to the business.

She also expressed concerns about the speed limit being lowered to help with traffic matters.

Lee assured the audience that the city's current water and sewer lines were capable of handling the truck stop; that a tax abatement would be for three years, allowing the truck stop to have more funds available to them for construction; and the Fly Investment Group, the company behind the business, would pay for the construction of a turn lane.

Fire Chief Glenn Hammond expressed concern about a fire hydrant being installed and was told a 6-inch water line would be added, allowing a hydrant to be installed. Hammond also said the truck stop would be good for Groveton.

Residents were told that the truck stop would be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and that construction was expected to start in late 2025 with a grand opening in spring 2026.

At a separate meeting on Sept. 29, council members:

  • discussed ambulance service and whether to renew its contract, but took no action;
  • approved a change of hours of operation for the Library. The new schedule is noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wed, Thursday and Friday, and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The change was made to accommodate work schedules, school hours and for the general public;
  • discussed minor details about the FY 2026 budget;
  • discussed the beginning of construction on an 80,000-gallon storage tank;
  • approved changes to the Groveton Economic Development Committee on its reporting schedule; and
  • approved payment of the monthly Inframark bill of $6,118.31.
