Council members discuss grant needs

GROVETON — City Council members discussed the next steps for grants to improve Groveton’s infrastructure at the Jan. 27 meeting.

Ben Rosenberg of U.S. Capital Advisors gave the council an update on the $4.2 million grant the city received from the Texas Water Development Board. The funds will be used toward new water lines and a new well for the city for the water system.

Related to this, the council adopted a water conservation plan.

Additionally, the council approved the necessary documents required by the state for the city to receive a grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture to help the city continue its project to improve streets and sidewalks.

In other business, the council:

  • proclaimed February as Black History Month;
  • approved a contract with the Trinity County Elections Administrator for the May election of council members. Up for election are Mayor Ralph Bennett and Council members Autumn (Dial) Persons and Robert Smith. Candidates interested in filing for the positions can do that at City Hall till Feb. 14;
  • approved the payment of $19,693.21 to Inframark for water and sewer services, including repair work;
  • heard a presentation on GIS Mapping to map out water lines; and
  • approved reservation of the city Square for early collection of Toys for Tots for March 15.
