Council ups water service fees, deposits

TRINITY — The Trinity City Council continued its work in updating all city ordinances by approving changes to water fees and vendor permits.

At Thursday’s meeting, City Manager Tracy Hutto said the city needed to raise deposit fees to cover at least two months of service, and raised the deposit to $200, up from $100, while raising service fees to help recoup costs.

Council Member Clegg Dewalt pointed out that each year, auditors tell the council they are losing money on water sales to the tune of $50,000 per month.

The council approved the changes, as well as a request from Hutto to pursue financing for generators for lift stations, which are required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, as well as equipment for the Public Works Department and vehicles for the Police Department.

With admonitions from council members on the need to be frugal, the council granted the request.

In a separate matter, council members approved raising rates for vendor fees.

Hutto said the rates have not been changed since 1982. The new rates will be $25 per day, up from $10; $50 per week, up from $15; $75 per month, up from 25; and $200 per year, up from $100.

In other business, council members:

  • tabled changes to the city’s animal control ordinance;
  • approved making the Trinity Beautification Committee a full part of the city and providing it with an annual budget;
  • approved changes to the Economic Development Board’s bylaws and several recommendations for expenses; and
  • approved the nominations of Monte Huffman and Kevin Searcy to the Trinity County Appraisal District board.
