County firefighters face busy weeks

The Trinity and Groveton battled blazes throughout last week  that damaged both homes and vehicles, as well as grassland.

On Wednesday, Trinity Fire Department responded to a multiple vehicle fire in Lake L Acres on Darrel Hall Road.

Fire Chief Keith Johnson said that five trucks and 19 firefighters from Trinity and three trucks and eight firefighters from 356 Fire Department brought the fire under control in about an hour.

He said seven old vehicles and two jet skis, plus 20 tires were burning when they arrived, having ignited from a fire that spread from a burn pile near the vehicles.

Johnson said the Trinity County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene, and issued a burn ban citation.

On Oct. 13, Trinity responded to a structure fire in Westwood Shores on East Westwood Drive after a caller reported a storage shed on fire.

Johnson said the first units on scene reported the shed destroyed and fire extended into the garage.

Twelve firefighters and three trucks extinguished the fire in about two hours, Johnson said.

The shed was a total loss, and the garage was moderately damaged in the attic.

The cause is undetermined.

Groveton

Fire Chief Glenn Hammond said the Groveton Fire Department on Oct. 14 assisted Corrigan Fire Department with a brushfire that threatened structures, and on Wednesday battled two brush fires that left only a few acres burned.

On Thursday, a small brushfire broke out on FM 3317.

Then, on Friday evening a structure fire erupted, which was a generator shed.

Hammond said the building was a total loss, and the surrounding brush was burned as well.

On Saturday, Hammond said a tree caught fire, possibly started by a lightning strike, on Highway 94.

Hammond cautioned that just because the area has seen a little rain over the last few days, the fire danger is not over. The county remains under a burn ban.
