GROVETON — The Trinity County Commissioners Court approved the creation of a committee to review requests for assistance from county veterans.
The matter was discussed at the June 24 regular meeting.
Vicki Branch, who oversees grants for the county, said that this year, the county received $50,000 to help veterans through a grant program, and there will need to be some discussion on how best to use those funds.
Last year, she said that the county has helped 66 veterans with issues such as paying for rent and utilities.
In order to decide the proper use of funds for high-ticket items, Branch said she could use a couple of extra eyes to help review the requests.
Commissioner Neal Smith said he is aware of some issues with veterans giving the veterans officer problems about minute details, and I asked if there is some document that could be prepared for veterans to sign stating that the program is a privilege, not a right, and that giving county employees a hard time could cause a loss of benefits.
Branch said it was possible, as the county is not obligated to help everyone that seeks assistance, and Commissioner Tommy Park said that a committee would help calm people who get upset and demand certain privileges.
The Court appointed Park and County Attorney Colton Hay to serve along with the county’s veterans officer and Branch.
