GROVETON — The Trinity County Commissioners Court approved a contract with San Jacinto County for housing inmates at a cheaper price.

The court first took up the matter in March, but questions about some costs were brought up, and County Judge Danny Martin sought to clear those up before commissioners approved the matter, which was done at the April 8 meeting.

County Attorney Colton Hay said he reviewed the question of the charges for taking Trinity inmates for medical care and found that the $50 per hour per deputy charge was the same as it was in the past.

Martin said that was the main reason for delaying the vote.

The new rate for housing prisoners is $65 per day per inmate, down $10 from the previous contracted price of $75. The last contract lapsed in September 2024.

In other business, the county:

  • proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Awareness Month;
  • approved closing two unnecessary bank accounts for vehicle inventory tax escrow, and approved the Trinity County Consolidated Tax Office taking over collection of vehicle inventory taxes;
  • approved personnel action forms;
  • approve disaster-related claims of $30,551.41; and
  • approved budget amendments.
