Just when I thought we were blessed with beautiful cold, sun shinny weather, I read that next week it will get down to 19 degrees. Do I even dare to complain compared to what is happening in California? No, but I just did.
Last week I listed the Trinity Chamber’s yearly calendar for 2025, and we do have a wonderful Gala coming up in two weeks. The Trinity County Crime Stoppers is hosting its 14th Annual Cowboy Mardi Gras Fundraiser on Jan. 25 at the Trinity Community Center (next to McDonalds) with the doors opening at 4:30 p.m.
The steak ribeye dinner starts at 5 p.m. and is provided by Ray Goodrum. The cost is $30 per plate. Tickets can be purchased from Crime Stoppers members or by calling President Larry Grant at (936) 662-1502 or Rick Villerreal at (936) 577-4383.
The dance starts at 8 p.m. after dinner is served, and the live auction which is being held in the big room is over. The silent auction will be held in the Annex Room and winners will be announced before the dance starts. The Band music is provided by Kevin Carter and Friends until midnight.
Each year the Trinity County Crime Stoppers Gala honors county law enforcement agencies at this dinner. Throughout the year, this organization supports the law agencies with tips and information as well as new equipment to help do their jobs inside and outside the county agencies.
•Welcome back Steve Jones, who has been hired to help with recruiting a new chief for the Trinity Police Department.
•Monday is MLK day. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Jan. 15, 1929, and was recognized for his service and volunteerism in 1994. As the government likes to promote people, federal holidays, or events on Mondays, if your birthday falls during the week (other than Monday), your celebration is honored or celebrated on the following Monday.
Do you remember when we used to celebrate President’s birthdays on their actual birth date? For example, George Washington’s birthday was celebrated on Feb. 22, and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated on Feb. 12, no matter what day they fell on each year.
(After 200 years, we find out George Washington’s birthday is probably not the 22 of February after all, according to Poor Richard’s Almanac, that he didn’t chop down the cherry tree, and that his false teeth were not wooden, but really made from some bones from a rhinoceros tooth.)
Now, we don’t have to remember any elected president’s birthday as the decision was made to celebrate all their birthdays as former presidents on a special day each year known as Presidents Day — on a Monday, of course. This year Presidents Day is Feb. 17.
Monday is also the day Donald J. Trump is sworn in as the newly elected President of the United States, and the weather prediction in Trinity County is a low of 20 degrees. I think I will just watch it on TV this year.
•Are we smarter now or just able to correct our mistakes through technology? Not knowing Pluto was not a real planet or Neptune has more rings really changed my life or fortune? The day is still 24 hours long, the tides are still ruled by the moon, and Mars is still red today. One thing that will not change is if I make it to Feb. 5, I will have lived 82 years on planet earth.
Monday is the first quarter meeting of the Trinity Historical Society which will be held at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church of Trinity on Elm Street. Please call Daina Baker for more information at (936) 581-1478.
•Tuesday is Dinner with Friends, which is held at the First Methodist Church of Trinity located at 131 N. Elm St. from 4- 6:30 p.m. The menu is a stuffed baked potato with all the fixings and a salad. The cost is $10 each person. Carry-outs are available. For more information, please call Laura at (936) 594-3826.
•The Trinity Volunteer Fire Department will be celebrating its 111th anniversary on Feb. 14. They will celebrate this occasion on Feb. 15, with the Trinity Historical Society, so watch this space for time and details.
•February is love month, so we have a lot of loving going on everywhere. If you need to leave the county you can, but 15 minutes is long enough to journey out into that good night or day. Also, we have a lot of birthdays in February and many old people are happy to be celebrating them.
Some birthdays this month are Lanora Ainsworth, Bubba Hirsch, Julia McMichael, and Phillip Morrison, which are in the first two weeks of February. There are several events we can attend to help celebrate our birth dates, but the most famous in our area is the Love Fest in Lovelady Texas which is always the second Saturday in February each year. The date this year is Feb. 8, but the event starts on Friday night and ends with a parade on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. There are vendors, contests, music and arts and crafts for your enjoyment. There is a barbecue cook-off which includes brisket, ribs, sausage, chili, and beans with great prize money and donations. Ony 15 miles away.
The Stesti Beer Garden will host a valentine event in Lovelady also, but I do not have all the information at this time.
•Martin Senior Citizen Center will host a Valentine Brunch on Feb. 14 at 400 Walker St. and doors open at 10 a.m. Details on the menu and cost are forthcoming, and a young singer for your entertainment has been planned. Silent and dessert auctions are also planned for this event. To reserve a table or a space, please call Diana at (936) 594-2625. To-go orders are available, but must be called on Thursday, and picked up by 11:15 a.m. on Friday.
•The Boys and Girls Club of Trinity is hosting a Lovers dinner and dance on Feb. 15, in Lovelady Texas, also in the old gym. For a town of only 500 people proper, they sure spread the love.
See you at the Trinity Crime Stoppers Gala.
