Eagles look to soar again

APPLE SPRINGS — The coming football season will be the prelude to district play, and Head Coach Cody Moree said the Eagles will start strong to get strong.

Moree said the first few games will be tough — intentionally.

“We don’t schedule down because we’re trying to be ready for district, and will play good (teams until then),” he said.

The Eagles should have an experienced squad this year, with seven kids that were starters coming back, all in key positions.

Junior Ethan LaBlanc, unanimously voted all-district center last year, a junior, gets the offense where it needs to be and makes the calls, and should have a good year, Moree said, and two of the best wide receivers in the district, both safeties and an outside linebacker are returning.

Moree also said that middle linebacker Bradyn Kaufman, a senior this year, is emerging as a frontrunner as a team leader.

Moree said that the offensive will be what people are used to seeing from the team, with lots of sets, motion and throwing the ball; and on defense, the team is introducing a new wrinkle to counter the jaybird unbalanced “I” offense that’s prevalent in the district.

The Eagles open the season in an away game in Fruitvale on Friday.
