TRINITY —Trinity firefighters assisted the Friday Volunteer Fire Department on Sunday afternoon with a woods fire.

Trinity Fire Chief Keith Johnson said the first unit on scene reported several large piles of timber burning, but firefighters from both departments were able to contain the fire and let the center continue to burn.

On Saturday, Johnson said the department assisted Texas Department of Public Safety troopers at a crash site State Highway 19 south of Trinity.

According to DPS reports, at approximately 7:27 a.m., a 2022 Dodge Charger was traveling north, while a 2014 Ford Escape was traveling south.

Reports indicate the driver of the Dodge failed to drive in a single lane, struck a concrete barrier to the right, veered back left into the southbound lanes, and struck the Ford.

The driver of the Dodge, 28-year-old Michael Reed of Trinity, was not injured.

The driver of the Ford, 71-year-old Donna Whittlesey of Trinity, was transported to Trinity MidCoast Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
