The Apple Springs and Groveton fire departments fought separate fires last week, and firefighters urge caution with any open flame.

On Thursday afternoon, Apple Springs, with the help of Groveton, quashed a four-acre grass fire that broke out in the 3000 block of Helmic Road near Apple Springs.

While crews were working that fire, Groveton firefighters were dispatched to a second grass fire in the Corrigan area, which totaled approximately seven acres.

On Jan. 27, the Groveton Fire Department battled a vehicle fire near Spencer Road that broke out at about 7:30 a.m.

Groveton Fire Chief Glenn Hammond said that the driver of the pickup, Justin Wars, said he felt his seat getting hot, and by the time he stopped and got out the seat started smoking and burst into flames.

Hammond said Wars ran to the closest house to report the fire. No cause was immediately available.

On Jan. 7, the county-wide burn ban was removed, but firefighters point out that conditions in Trinity County are still very favorable for fire to spread.

Anyone planning to burn outdoors should use extreme caution and follow basic guidelines:

  • Never leave a fire unattended
  • Keep water or suppression tools nearby
  • Be mindful of wind and dry conditions

If a fire gets out of control, call 911 immediately.
