Grants to help Trinity County veterans

GROVETON — Trinity County has been awarded two grants to help area veterans with funding and housing.

According to Chloe Gaddy, Veterans Grant Intake Specialist for Trinity County, the Texas Veterans Commission approved Trinity County for the Financial Assistance and Housing for Texas Heroes grants, which are active from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31, 2027.

This is Trinity County's third time to be awarded the Financial Assistance grant and the most aid we have ever received at one time.

The first grant is intended to assist veterans, surviving spouses and their dependents with financial burdens such as monthly utilities, food assistance, emergency vehicle repairs, and emergency restorative dental care.

One unique and beneficial characteristic about this grant is that eligibility is not based solely on income requirements; while income is considered, eligibility is determined by financial hardship.

Gaddy said the county also was fortunate to receive, for the first time this year, the Housing for Texas Heroes grant, which is intended to assist veterans and surviving spouses with home repairs such as making a home ADA-compliant, weatherization, and general safety repairs.

To qualify for this grant, a person must provide prove veteran status (or proof they are a surviving spouse), proof of low income per HUD guidelines for a four-person household (regardless of actual household size), proof of primary residence/homestead, 100 percent home ownership, and proof of being current on taxes.

For both of these grants, a person must be a resident of Trinity County and must be able to provide proof of residency.
