With the new school year, the stadiums of the county’s schools will come to life with the most-anticipated seasons — football is back.

The Apple Springs Eagles open their season Friday against the Chester Yellowjackets, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Head Coach Jeremiah Dickson will take the field as head coach for the first time, hoping to continue the program’s success. Dickson replaces Cody Moree, who retired last year.

•For Groveton, the Indians open the season hosting the Alto Yellowjackets in a game that will honor a former student.

Groveton Independent School District has named the stadium after Rodney Thomas with a brief ceremony at 6:30 p.m.

As a high school athlete, Thomas led the Groveton Indians to 32 consecutive victories and back-to-back 2A state championships in 1989 and 1990. He finished his high school career with 8,441 rushing yards, 115 touchdowns, and still ranks as one of the top all-time rushers in Texas history.

•Trinity opens its season with a short road trip to Jewett to face the Leon Cougars. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
