Groveton board looks ahead to summer break

GROVETON — The Groveton ISD Board of Trustees began making plans for the facilities once the students leave at its March meeting.

Superintendent Jim Dillard said the board reviewed a summer work list, which will mostly be focused on security. The district will update security by installing additional fencing as well as replacing facility flooring on multiple campuses.

Dillard also said the board is considering approval to build an additional exit area because there is congestion in the pickup/dropoff area.

“We want a new exit to improve traffic flow and safety and get cars picking up children away from bus lines,” he said. “Our main concern is safety, and it will be our focus.”

Other projects considered are a new training and locker room facility and renovations to football field.

“We always have a wish list,” Dillard said.

In a separate matter, the board approved the cancellation of the May School Board election. Dillard said that there were three positions up for election — two with incumbent members and one open due to the resignation of Benny McLain. Since only three candidates filed, unopposed incumbents Steve Ecord and Sam Shanafelt were re-elected, and a new board member, Anthony Lowrey, will fill the open position.

In other business, the board:

  • approved updates to school policy;
  • discussed enrollment, as the student count is up slightly. Dillard said that as of March the district overall was up seven students; and
  • discussed teacher contract renewals.
