GROVETON — The Groveton ISD Board of Trustees were reminded that looking local for purchases helps both the school and the community.
Superintendent Jim Dillard said that at the July 28 meeting, multiple business owners came before the board encouraging them to use the town’s resources instead of looking outside of the district for supplies.
Dillard said the district provides meals or shops elsewhere because it’s economical, but the local business owners reminded us that out of county businesses don’t pay taxes here.
“It was an eye-opener for me,” he said. “We should be looking to support local. Their words didn’t fall on deaf ears.”
In other business, board members:
- approved a state-mandated electronics device policy. The district has elected to provide students with a storage device, called a Yondr pouch, that will lock up the devices but allow students to keep them in their possession;
- held preliminary discussions regarding the tax rate and expected revenues; the projected revenue from the state is about $7 million, and collection from local taxes is around $3 million. The board also set the date for tax rate and budget approval as Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m.;
- approved Citizens State Bank as its depository;
- approved property and casualty insurance through the Texas Association of School Boards;
- discussed school policy and ESSA grants;
- approved an interlocal agreement with the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office for security guards for each school campus;
- approved campus and district needs assessments;
- opted out of allowing non-enrolled UIL participation in extracurricular activities;
- approved student and employee handbooks for new year; and
- approved changes to the salary schedule.
