GROVETON — The Groveton City Council met with its well contractor to discuss specifications at a special meeting on Aug. 18.
Mayor Hayden Lee said that the engineer from Schaumberg Inc., and the new well will cost in the neighborhood of $1.2 million.
City Secretary Dorrie Cotton said the well, which will be dug adjacent to the current well the city owns, will be 550 feet in depth and is expected to pump 100-300 gallons per minute, which is above average.
The city has secured grant funds for the project, which should be completed within 18 months, she said.
In a separate matter, the council discussed road closures around schools.
Cotton said while it had been a practice in the past to close those roads during the school day, Lee said it wasn’t possible because area residents cannot access their property. He did say that it would OK during pickup and drop-off times.
Additionally, GISD Superintendent Jim Dillard approached the council about the possibility of purchasing North Magee and Smith streets. Cotton said no action was taken as the matter will need to be researched.
The council also heard an update on a proposed truck stop slated to be constructed east of town. Lee told the council that TxDOT approved two entrances to the facility, one on Highway 287 and one on FM 3154.
Cotton said a public hearing is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 15 for residents to ask about the proposed truck stop.
