Groveton discusses TEA ratings

GROVETON — While the letter grade for Groveton ISD went down a bit, Groveton Superintendent Jim Dillard said the C grade was based on information from the 2022-23 school year and doesn’t reflect the changes that have been made in the system.

Dillard said the district usually maintains a B average, but the latest release showed GISD went down to a C.

Dillard said there were other issues with the results, including the fact that the methodology was changed from the previous year.

“I don’t agree with the system in place, and there’s no money in success,” he said. “It’s not a good indicator of what’s going on. We’ve made some improvements, and I expect us to get back to a B soon.”

Also on the agenda at the April 28 meeting of the Board of Trustees was a discussion on renovations to the high school football field.

Dillard said the field has been a topic of discussion for some time, and the district has been working on the stadium in phases. It started with replacing the lights with LED for better lighting and lower costs, and the next step was to resurface the track.

The field itself is a problem, he said; they have had issues with the irrigation system and drainage, and Dillard said he was not sure the last time it was crowned and sodded. The board, he said, had a vision and elected to go with synthetic turf, and approved a contract with Hellas Co. Construction.

Dillard said construction was to take place immediately, and the goal is to have it completed by next season.

He also said that for safety, the track will be locked until construction is complete.

In other business, the board:

  • approved instruction materials for coming year;
  • approved TEKS certification and materials allotment for coming year;
  • approved renewing the contract with Powell Law Group of Austin for legal services;
  • approved a letter of engagement with Axley & Rode of Lufkin for the annual audit;
  • approved resignations and new hires; and
  • discussed high school graduation, which will take place May 30 at 7 p.m. at the high school gym.
