Groveton school security needs tightening: Report

GROVETON — A recent ESC Region 6 security audit of the Groveton Junior/Senior High School showed some vulnerabilities.

Superintendent Jim Dillard said that while the audit was not as good as they had hoped, several issues have been resolved and plans are being made to address those that remain.

The Groveton ISD Board of Trustees discussed the findings at the Oct. 28 meeting.

Dillard said the audit is done in two phases — the first is auditors try to gain access through exterior doors, and the second is to inspect every door.

During the first phase, a door that is rarely used had a mechanical failure which allowed entry, which Dillard said had been repaired. In the second portion, auditors found four exterior doors that were unlocked or open due to human error.

The district had staff training on Friday and will next submit a corrective action plan to Texas Education Association.

In other business, the board:

•approved a TASB update;

•approved an agreement with Houston-Trinity County Special Services arrangement; and

•approved holding the November meeting on Nov. 20 and the December meeting on Dec. 18.
