GROVETON — The Groveton ISD Board of Trustees gave its blessing for the use of cameras that will be mounted on school property.

Superintendent Jim Dillard said that at the Dec. 17 meeting, the board approved a property license agreement with Flock Safety.

He said the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office is deploying cameras in Groveton that are powered by AI technology to monitor what’s going on in the city. The agreement allowed for cameras to be mounted on school property.

Dillard said the measure will improve safety for the students.

In other business, the board:

  • discussed school attendance, which was down a little bit, particularly this month because of the flu virus. It also has seen a dip of average daily attendance in December to 92 percent, down from the August-November rate of 95 percent;
  • held a second open hearing on policy updates. Dillard said the third will be next month, when the board is expected to adopt the measure;
  • approved recommendations from the Library Board;
  • approved an order for election, and set filing for Jan. 14 to Feb. 13, 2026, at the school administration office; and
  • approved a one-year extension for Dillard’s contract and accepted the resignation of Elementary School Principal Rhonda Lowery after a closed session. Dillard said Lowery worked for district for 3 years and was instrumental in leading the campus to district UIL championships 3 years in a row.
