GROVETON — In 1982, Clara White, along with ladies from First Baptist Church, opened a thrift store.

That store has grown to support food distribution to needy families on the third Thursday of every month, and usually 200 to 300 families get frozen meats, canned goods, cereals, juices, water and other foodstuffs.

On Oct. 11, Ladies in Action had a grand reopening to celebrate repainting and reorganization of the shop. The front door was moved to grant ramp access; toys, housewares, small furniture, lamps, men's jeans and shoes were moved to shelving; larger furniture, while not in the store are available.

The ladies who manage the organization want to give a special thank you to Rickey Wars, Arlan Locke and Bob Hupp for their help with the remodeling project.

Today, there are 14 ladies who manage Ladies in Action. The shop offers a little of everything, and is the only department store in town. Prices are low, with $2 blouses and pants and children's shoes only $1.  Ladies in Action also donates clothing and other items to help children at area schools, and has health-related items such as walkers and shower chairs for disabled people.

Everyone at Ladies in Action appreciates all the donations that people in Groveton are so kind to give and the financial help from area churches.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
