MADISONVILLE — Apple Springs won the best-of-three series over Oakwood to claim the Bi-District championship on Saturday.
While the Lady Eagles split games with Oakwood on Thursday, losing 7-4 but winning 4-3, the clutch 21-1 win on Saturday put the team in the next bracket.
The first game on Thursday was a pitcher’s duel, with Faith Smith striking out 9 and giving up only 1 walk. Even though she gave up 6 hits, it didn’t translate to runs for Oakwood.
Smith also was a leader at the plate, pulling down a double and a walk and adding 2 stolen bases. Katie Davis added 2 hits to the offense.
The tables turned in the next game, however, as Oakwood did turn the team’s 7 hits on Smith’s pitching into 7 runs, with the help of 8 stolen bases and 3 walks on the Lady Eagles’ pitcher. Smith did notch 7 strikeouts in the game.
Apple Springs totaled 4 hits in the game, with 2 coming from Katie Davis.
There was a new attitude on Saturday, as Apple Springs opened the scoring floodgates behind doubles from Brilynn Hicks, Smith, Davis, Lauren Lankford and 2 from Jade Aycock, and a triple by Summer Lamb. The team piled up 15 hits and 19 RBIs in the effort.
Smith got back into the groove on the mound, tossing 7 strikeouts while giving up only 3 hits.
The Lady Indians not only claimed the Bi-District crown with a pair of wins over Timpson last week, but pitcher Abi Kayte Roberts hit a milestone having tossed 400 career strikeouts.
Groveton downed Timpson in two games, winning 9-2 on Wednesday and 11-3 on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Roberts tossed a mighty 15 strikeouts to keep the Lady Bears at bay while giving up only 3 hits.
Lauren Moore went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a double, and Kambrie Crawford, Madisen Howard and Lainee Reed each added two. Reaghan Benton added a hit, and Kinlee Albus contributed a triple.
In the Thursday game, Roberts had an impressive 13 strikeouts while giving up only 4 hits in the win.
Howard led at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance, followed closely by Benton, who went 3-for-5.
