Lady Eagles dominate the diamond with district win

With a 9-8 edging of Highway 94 rival Centerville on Monday, the Lady Eagles won district and move into the postseason.

Centerville’s Avery Brown and Apple Springs’ Faith Smith had a pitchers’ duel, but Smith got the edge by allowing only 7 hits to Brown’s 11 and giving up only 3 earned runs to Brown’s 8. Smith had 11 strikeouts while Brown posted 9.

At the plate, the Lady Eagles were more effective, combining for 5 doubles and 2 triples; Abrie McWhorter, Jade Aycock and Summer Lamb all had 3 hits apiece.

For Centerville, Brown led her cause at the plate with 3 hits and 4 RBIs, while Jamie Whittlesey added 2.

On Friday night against Chester, Apple Springs won 5-1.

Faith Smith pitched all 7 innings, striking out 12, and allowing 1 run on only two hits. At the plate, Faith Smith had one hit, and an RBI.

Summer Lamb also recorded a hit in the game.

Groveton

The Lady Indians are heading to the postseason following a 5-2 win over West Sabine on April 14 and a 9-1 win over Lovelady on Friday.

Against West Sabine, Abi Kayte Roberts fired 10 strikeouts and allowed only 4 hits to keep West Sabine at bay, and she added an RBI hit to aid the effort. Lainee Reed, Maryssa Rivers, Reaghan Benton and Kambrie Crawford added hits as well.

Against Lovelady, Roberts again got the win, this time firing 14 strikeouts but giving up 6 hits. Madisen Howard and Reed each had 2 hits to lead the offense.

Trinity

The Lady Tigers split their final district games against Crockett, losing 11-1 on April 14 but winning 13-12 on Friday.

Trinity went 9-15 on the season.

In the first stanza, Carolyn Cleveland and Chrissie Vaughn had the only hits for Trinity, with Vaughn getting the team’s lone run on an inside-the-park home run to bring her total to 13.

Valerie Cleveland worked the mound, tossing 1 strikeout and giving up 6 hits.

On Friday, Valerie Cleveland turned it around, firing 3 strikeouts and giving up 8 hits to outlast Crockett.

Altogether, Trinity had 15 hits on the night, led by Mackenzie Slimp with 4. Carolyn Cleveland, Asis Cerda and Emilyn Gates each had 2, with Cerda posting a homer.
