GROVETON — Early on Christmas Day, the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a reckless driver. Deputies located the vehicle and attempted to stop it but were unable to get the vehicle stopped.

While deputies were attempting to stop the vehicle, it crashed into an 18-wheeler.

Reports indicate the driver was an elderly gentleman who was fatigued and falling asleep while driving. There was no alcohol involved. While there were only minor injuries, multiple vehicles were damaged and the situation could have ended much worse.

This crash is a strong reminder of how dangerous driving while fatigued can be, especially during the holidays. Fatigue slows reaction time, affects judgment, and can be just as dangerous as driving impaired.

As you travel this holiday season:

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Take frequent breaks
  • Pull over if you feel drowsy
  • Do not push yourself to keep driving
  • Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers investigated a two-vehicle crash on Farm-to-Market Road 356, south of Trinity, that occurred Thursday, December 25, 2025.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates that at approximately 6:10 a.m., a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling north on F.M. 356. It is reported that the driver of the Chevrolet fell asleep while driving, left the road to the left, struck a power pole, and the vehicle then overturned.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 16-year-old male of Lovelady, and one passenger, 18-year-old Troy Preston of Lovelady, were not injured.

This is an ongoing investigation.
