TRINITY — As part of her advocacy on behalf of students receiving services through special education, Dr. Audrey Young, Texas State Board of Education Member for District 8, collaborated with Lakeshore Learning to donate a calming corner for students at Lansberry Elementary School in Trinity.
Assistant Principal Nicole Chapman said, "The calm down corner is a big asset to our classroom. It really helps my friends refocus and recenter themselves so they can get back to learning and having fun."
The Calming Corner Instant Learning Space features a canopy, rug, pillows, books, a big bean bag, shelf to store sensory items, a weighted lap pad, and may other items to help students learn to self-regulate and provide a safe space.
"All of the different sensory tools, flexible seating, and floor desk are a big help with my friends. It helps distract from a behavior starting by letting them choose to sit on the bean bag, or work in a different area of the room with the floor desk." Chapman said.
The value of the donation was nearly $2,000, but the value to the students is immeasurable.
