The  call for academia is being heard in the schools

Posted

It is hard to believe that summer is almost over for the TISD students. It is less than a month until school starts on Aug. 10, and we haven’t even had the hottest days of summer yet.

My children and grandchildren went to float the Guadalupe River this past weekend, and I thought they were crazy. My idea of camping out now is to stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Austin.

This week the Trinity Methodist Church is having their Vacation Bible School Program, and they have many plans for the children’s enjoyment and fun along with teaching spiritual knowledge.

This past weekend at the Westwood Shores Country the Trinity Methodist Church hosted a Golf Tournament to benefit the church’s The children and adult missions. It was a wonderful fundraiser and the attendees finished before the rain came.

•On Saturday, July 25, VFW Post 6899 is hosting a car show at the VFW Hall parking lot from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Car entrant’s registration fee is $20. The car show is presented by the Trinity County Back Yard Builds. There will be a 50/50 raffle, a bounce house for kids, and food concessions held inside the VFW Hall. No alcoholic drinks permitted outside. Alcoholic beverages sold inside only and must be consumed inside the VFW Hall. You must be 21 years of age to purchase or drink inside the Hall.

First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded for trucks, cars and motorcycles at 1:30 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the VFW and TCBYB sponsors of this show. Please come and support your local veterans of Trinity County.

•There will be many announcements coming up in the next few weeks regarding TISD extra curriculum activities, such as open houses, Meet the Teacher Night, Meet the Tiger Night, new teacher orientation week, football practices, local scrimmages, band rehearsals, and volleyball tryouts and practices.

•There are going to be two fundraisers in August for Jerry Tullos, who needs repairs to his home due to fire damage over the Fourth of July weekend. This is an extremely bad time of the year for fires so be careful inside and outside.

The first fundraiser will be a bake sale on Aug. 1, in front of the Fire House Pizzeria located at 110 Brantley St. in Trinity. The bake sale will start at 9 a.m. There will be lots of homemade goodies made with love.

Jerome “Jerry” Tullos has been a volunteer fire fighter for 53 years and is now retired. The bake sale is to purchase items for the second fundraiser that will be announced and held on Aug. 22. For more information, please call Kim Spillman at (936) 661-1568 to donate or help support this retire community servant.

•I have two new VFW Saturday afternoon dances to announce for August and Sept..

The first one is Aug. 1. This Eddie and Maxie Dance is held from noon to 4 p.m. at the VFW Hall on Caroline Street. The country classic music is brought to you by the Winchester Band for the price of $15 each person. The canteen is open, but the snack bar is not.

The second monthly dance is Sept. 12 from noon to 4 p.m. with the same information as above, except the band playing is the Whiskey Bent Band of Texas. For more information, please call the Post at (936) 594-9467.

•We lost a longtime Congressman this weekend. He was 71-year-old Lindsey Graham. Mr. Graham had the same operation and condition as John Ritter did when he died too early in his career (“Three’s Company”). His father was Tex Ritter, if you remember, the well-known country/Western singer from Texas about 40 years ago.

Another Congressman, Mitch McConnell, I believe is struggling to survive at this time, and we may be losing him soon due to his ill health.

He is reported to have fallen and suffering from pneumonia. He is one of the Republican Senators from Kentucky.

•To celebrate the 77th Community Fair, I have been asked to host another 42 Domino Tournament at Joseph’s Restaurant on Friday, Oct. 2, during this event. Watch this space.

I did want to announce the winners of the 42 Domino Tournament the Martin Senior Service Center on the Fourth of July because it was such a wonderful event.

The first-place winners were John Hooks and Roy Anding; the second-place winners were Bill Mott and John Ward; and the third-place winners were Joyce Taber and George Holder.

See you around the neighborhood.
