The county’s children to converge on eggs this week

Posted

It is hard to believe this weekend is already Easter and many events are planned for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. First the most important event is Easter Sunday, April 5, where you can celebrate with your family and friends.

April 3 is Good Friday and two major events are planned for the children of Trinity and the “elder” children of Trinity. First one is for the young children, an Easter egg hunt starting at 10 a.m. at the River Pointe Rehabilitation Healthcare Center on South Robb Street.

Meet the Easter Bunny by visiting the photo booth and take a picture with him. Free snowcones for all attendees. Prizes, pictures, games, Easter Bunny, and much more for children under 14. For more information, please call the main office at (936) 594-7521.

The second event for the “older” children is a Good Friday Easter Luncheon at Martin Senior Center on Walker Street starting at 11:30 a.m., with the doors opening at 11 a.m. There will be games, contests, and Best Dressed Easter Person Award along with picking surprise eggs. The cost is $15 per person, and children over 80 years old only pay $12. The menu is ham, turkey, broccoli cheese casserole, sweet potatoes, salad, dessert, and drinks. Eat in or take out. For more information, please call Sherrie at (936) 594-2625.

April 4 is the VFW Post 6899 Easter egg hunt at 400 Caroline Street. The event starts at 10 a.m. and Children through the age of 14 can participate. There will be a cornhole tournament, a 3-legged race, a sack race, a hula hoop contest, a cake walk, and of course the Easter egg hunt for kids with special prizes. For more information, please call Marilyn at (281) 782-8309.

Sunday, April 5, is Easter Sunday.

•One of the biggest fundraising events in Trinity County is a Fish Fry on the First Sunday of April every year. When I tried to recount the number of years that I have been attending this event, I couldn’t.

However, I do remember several memorable occurrences that happened during this fundraising event over the years. It has been held during rain, hail, sleet, and even snow.

The Trinity Volunteer Fire Department’s Annual Fish Fry pre-sales are so large now, people can drive through the Trinity Volunteer Fire Station and get their dinner without ever getting out of their cars or having to wait in line.

The cost of the dinner is still only $10 a plate per person. The menu is fried catfish, French fries, coleslaw, pinto beans, hush puppies, and a drink if you eat at the station.

The Trinity Volunteer Fire Department is one of the best services in all of Trinity County. We are fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers. We are lucky to have them.

We have lost a lot of valuable Trinity City icons who have been members of this prestigious group since I moved here in 1997. For instance, Wayne and Hayne Huffman, Butch Gibson, and Lyle Stubbs. For more information regarding this fundraiser, please call Keith Johnson at (936) 662-3916.

•Next Month in May we have some new and old announcements to make. Watch this space.

On a side note, I want to thank everyone who has been kind to me during this past year. April has for some reason been a sad month for me to overcome during the last 10 years.

I used to love April’s Fools Day on April1, but after my mother died on April Fool’s Day 54 years ago in 1972, I haven’t cared to play jokes on people anymore.

My oldest sister died during Covid-19 on April 20, 2021, and my brother-in-law’s memorial service was held on April 1, 2025. Then three weeks later, my husband died on April 24, 2025.

And needless to say, I have to pay taxes this year on April 15. I could file an extension, but I still have to pay anyway, so I might as well pay now. Bah, humbug.

See you at the MSSC Friday.
