Tigers celebrate Homecoming with 62-14 rout of Longhorns

TRINITY — After 2 weeks on the road and a 1-1 record, the Trinity Tigers got to work dismantling the Longhorns.

It was a full rout as Trinity won 62-14.

The Tigers started on defense and after allowing one first down, Robert Galvan intercepted a pass and gave the Tigers the ball at the Longhorn 45-yard line. Six plays later, Terian Maxie made a 1-yard touchdown run, Alex Sanchez added the extra point and the Tigers took a 7-0 lead.

After forcing a punt from the Longhorns, Maxie found Corde’ Walker open for a 50-yard touchdown, Sanchez added the extra point, bringing the score 14-0. The defense forced another Longhorn turnover, starting at the 48-yard line, the Tigers took four plays for Maxie to complete a 36-yard touchdown pass to Chance Barron.

Leading 21-0, the Longhorns were able to put together a scoring drive as time wound down in the first quarter.

Leading 21-7, the Tigers’ next drive resulted in an interception in the end zone. The Tigers forced a punt, but the ball was mishandled and the Longhorns recovered, giving them an opportunity to tighten the score 21-14 with a 67-yard touchdown pass. With just under 5 minutes left in the half, the Tigers took 6 plays and a 42-yard touchdown pass to Mason Dunn.

After forcing another Longhorn punt 5 plays later, Ayden DeBose made the 1-yard run into the endzone. With just 21 seconds left in the first half, the Longhorns fumbled the snap which was picked up at the 13-yard line by Cayden Knight. Maxie ran the 13 yards needed to give the Tigers a 42-14 lead at halftime.

The Tigers received the opening kickoff of the second half. Antwone Daniels received the ball at the 30 and broke free for a 70-yard return for the score. Leading 49-14, the Tiger defense kept the Longhorns offense in check and the Tigers were able to add two more scores in the quarter, a 4-yard Maxie pass to Walker and a 16-yard Maxie touchdown run.

Entering the 4th quarter, the Tigers held a commanding 62-14 lead. With most of the starters on the bench, the Tigers of the future were able to showcase their skills highlighted by a 33-yard run by Jordan Hall. With the ball on the Longhorn 17-yard line and time winding down, the Tigers opted to end the game in victory formation and celebrate Homecoming with family and friends.

Coach Shaun Stout commended the team on such a dominating victory; he stressed the importance of another good week of practice and preparation as the Tigers will once again be on the road Friday night as they travel to New Waverly to face the Bulldogs.

Groveton

The Indians fell to host San Augustine 55-20 on Friday.
