Trinity board sees changes

TRINITY — The Trinity ISD Board of Trustees, with a touch of sadness, said goodbye to one of the longest-serving members of the district.

Dorothy Franklin, an educator and member of the board, was recognized for 57 years of service to the district at the board’s meeting on May 18.

Franklin lost her re-election bid in early May.

In addition to several bouquets and a plaque commemorating her service, Franklin will be added to the district’s Wall of Honor, along with John Copley, Janet Hortman and Dr. Wayne Steely.

After the recognition, the board did some reorganization; Kevin Searcy retains his role as board president, Monty Huffman remains vice president, and Elizabeth King replaces Franklin as secretary.

Another change on the horizon is the superintendent, since Dr. John Kaufman has tendered his resignation.

At the meeting, Dr. Benjamin Petty signed his contract and will take over as superintendent on June 15.

Kaufman said he will remain with the district until July 31 and then will become Superintendent Emeritus.

In other business, the board:

  • discussed the new classrooms at Lansberry Elementary, which will be ready for use June 15;
  • approved the purchase of bus, the cost of which is not to exceed $168,000. The money will come from the district fund balance; and
  • discussed the security audit.
