Trinity council passes budget

TRINITY — The Trinity City Council OK’d its FY 2026 budget on Thursday, one that shows some deficit spending even with a hike in the tax rate.

The overall budget shows revenues at $4,789,480 and expenditures of $5,163,566. City services such as sewer and trash were the only two departments showing a revenue surplus.

At the meeting, Council Member Bubba Smith said that he felt the council did as well as it could. He also said that the city should consider setting aside funds annually to begin a replacement program for police and Public Works vehicles.

In a separate matter, Mayor Billy Goodin addressed audience and residents’ concerns regarding a change in the parade route for the Saturday Community Fair event.

Goodin said he was not trying to break tradition, since the parade normally traveled down South Robb Street, but improve safety.

He said traffic on that street, which also is Highway 19, has become horrible and becoming increasingly dangerous.

“I’d rather people be mad at me than get hurt,” he said. “I put safety first.”

Goodin said it will take some time and input from everyone to come up with a satisfactory solution.

In other business, council members:

  • approved the 2023-2024 audit, which was returned with an unmodified opinion;
  • appointed Keith Johnson as Municipal Judge;
  • approved the 2025 tax roll;
  • approved resolutions for deposit requirements and for interest and sinking funds;
  • approved the city’s holiday calendar; and
  • approved a grease trap ordinance.
