Trinity ISD opts against special prayer period

TRINITY — The Trinity ISD Board of Trustees declined to create a special period for prayer at its March 23 meeting.

Superintendent Dr. John Kaufman said the board voted to not create the time, as set down as an option in Texas Senate Bill 11, because the board felt it was just unnecessary.

Kaufman said the district already has policies that worship is allowed before school, at lunch, during free periods or study hall and at conferences. The district also has a Fellowship of Christian Athletes for interested students.

“No one is prohibited from exercising faith unless it interferes with academic performance,” Kaufman said.

In a separate matter, the board discussed the progress on the construction of new classrooms at Lansberry Elementary School. Kaufman said everything is on schedule for an early-to-mid July opening, and the new rooms will be in use next school year.

In other business, the board:

  • approved the out-of-state trip for Trinity High School BETA and the Trinity Middle School BETA National Convention trip to Nashville;
  • approved the list of books suggested for the library by the Library Committee;
  • approved an agreement with Interquest Detection Canines of Southeast Texas for the 2026-2027 year, at a cost of $340 a day;
  • approved the appraisal calendar;
  • approved a transition plan for algebra and geometry instructional materials to the Bluebonnet curriculum;
  • approved Texas Kids First to provide student athletic accident insurance; and
  • approved administration contracts.
