We honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice

Monday was Memorial Day, and flags were flown everywhere to remember the federal holiday which is observed on the last Monday of May to mourn and honor all military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces.

The true meaning, unlike Veterans Day which honors all living and past service members, Memorial Day specifically is dedicated to the men and women who gave their lives in service to their country. It is a day of national reflection, gratitude, and remembrance.

Originally known as “Decoration Day,” the tradition began after the Civil War as a time for communities to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and wreaths. The first large-scale national observance took place at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868.

There are three ways of National Remembrance, according to internet sources:

National moment of remembrance. Americans are asked to remember and observe this day by pausing for one minute of silence at  3 p.m. local time to honor the fallen.

Decoration of graves. Volunteers and families to visit cemeteries to place the American Flag on the graves of fallen service members.

Flags at half-staff. On Memorial Day the American Flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then raised to the top of the staff.

American Flag Day is June 11.
