WOODVILLE – The Woodville ISD Board of Trustees recognized this week the district’s UIL Academic All-State recipients and the “Teachers of the Year” for each WISD campus, as well as the District Teacher of the Year.
At its regular board meeting on Monday evening, WISD Athletic Director Heath Clawson presented the athletic honors to Avery Gazzaway, for volleyball and powerlifting; Eagle football players Kenneth Rigsby and Ethan Shird and to athletic trainer Laketiha Barlow.
Clawson noted the stringent academic requirements involved in receiving the honor, and said that two other Eagles, Gage Tolar and Tanner LeDoux, were also named eligible for the award.
The honor, which is awarded through the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA), recognizes senior athletes, trainers and managers who excel in academics through their cumulative GPAs, class ranking and ACT/SAT scoring.
The three who were recognized among the faculty as “Teacher of the Year” were Lauren Barnhart for the Woodville Elementary campus; Marsha Watts at Woodville Middle School and Valerie Currie for Woodville High School.
Currie also was named the district-wide “Teacher of the Year”.
Woodville Elementary principal Allison Moseley said of Barnhart that she is “the epitome of an elementary school teacher,” and has pushed her students to do things that most would think impossible of the Pre-K level.
Woodville Middle School principal Andrew Ireland said that Watts’s students have some of the highest testing scores and she continues to push her students to succeed.
WISD Superintendent Lisa Meysembourg said of Currie that she “is always present for whatever needs to be done; she steps up.”
