WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the passage of President Donald Trump’s landmark One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Woodville’s own Rep. Brian Babin said the legislation “delivers historic economic relief to American families,” and touted the bill as a restoration of fiscal sanity that will slash the federal spending deficit by $2 trillion.
Babin, who represents Texas’s 36th Congressional District, voted in favor of the bill, which cleared the house with a 218-214 vote, before its July 4 deadline.
Babin said the bill “puts America first in every sense,” and “means bigger paychecks, lower taxes, secure borders and strong national defense.”
The bill, a reconciliation bill, according to its summary text, “reduces taxes, reduces or increases spending for various federal programs, increases the statutory debt limit, and otherwise addresses agencies and programs throughout the federal government.”
The bill, referred to by many outlets as a “megabill,” is a vehicle for much of Trump’s domestic policy agenda. Critics of the sweeping legislation cite the cuts to Medicaid. One report projected that more than 300,000 Texans could lose their Medicaid health insurance once the changes take effect in 2027.
Medicaid is a federal-state funded health insurance program for low-income and disabled Americans. More than four million Texans receive Medicaid assistance, and in 2023, the federal government paid for nearly two-thirds of Texas’s $57 billion in costs under the program, according to KFF, a non-profit health policy organization.
Before the passage of the bill through the House last Thursday, following the Senate’s passage the prior day, Democratic congressman Hakeem Jeffries, of New York, delayed voting for more than eight hours, with a speech against the bill.
Before signing the bill into law, Trump thanked Republican leaders for supporting the bill, and added that Democrats voted against the bill out of spite. “They hate Trump, but I hate them too,” he said.
Babin added in his remarks about the bill that the legislation “prevents the largest tax hike in American history, and shields small businesses from the crushing weight of federal overreach.” He also noted provisions of the bill, which include a funding of mass deportations under Trump’s border security policy, and the hire of 10,000 ICE agents, 5,000 customs officers and 3,000 border patrol agents.
