CHESTER – Chester City Council approved a partnership with their local BOM Bank on a new sign at their regularly scheduled meeting Monday evening, Nov. 3.

Mayor Robert Poynter noted the final placement, and approval, will be after a consult with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), and the approval seemed promising.

The city needs a website and is taking bids. After one bid, several options were forwarded. City Secretary Balela Weaver explained a new law that demanded the city post several public information articles on their website, like the budget, meetings, and sundry policies.

The council cancelled the election, as councilmembers Gail Williams and Bryan Davis ran unopposed and will remain on the council.

Weaver also reported some mandatory classes she needs to take regarding what appeared to be more unfunded mandates from the state on a five-year beautification plan. She made several frugal suggestions to remain in compliance and after the class would report back on the specifics.

Verizon is replacing a cell tower. They had informed Chester and the Tyler County Heritage Society in order to avoid conflict with any sites of historical interest or any so designated by the state or others. Davis looked at the paperwork and affirmed that it seemed to be an upgrade or replacement of the current tower.

There was some discussion on a CD that matured. Weaver had investigated several best interest rates, with favor leaning to a bank in Corrigan. Weaver had discussed options with a financial advisor who felt confident the new Fed rates look like a rise in CD rates were likely in about six months. Councilman Wes Whitworth was skeptical. Poynter voiced a concern to go with a six-month renewal and revisit in May, which the council approved.
