WOODVILLE – There will be a new face in Eagle Country starting Monday, May 5.

Heath Clawson was named as the new athletic director and head football coach for the Woodville ISD athletics program, after the WISD Board of Trustees approved his hiring.

“We are excited to have him join our Eagle team,” said WISD superintendent Lisa Meysembourg.

Clawson, who has 23 years of coaching experience, including seven of them in the position he is coming onboard to serve at WISD, comes from Elgin ISD, where he led the Wildcats to their first playoff appearance in almost a decade in 2022, during his first year heading the program. Clawson was awarded the “Coach of the Year” nod from the Texas High School Coaches Association for his work in Elgin, among 5A region 8 schools. Clawson worked for the past four years at Elgin where he helped to build a culture of winning.

Jacob Rowe, an assistant coach at Elgin who worked with Clawson said “his hard work and endurance through adversity has transformed a team, a school and a town into an institution of excellence.”

Clawson, who is an alumnus of Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, inherits another history-making program that saw a continued upward trajectory. The Eagles finished their 2024 season as runners-up to the state UIL 3A Division 2 title, a feat that no Eagle football team had accomplished prior.

Clawson’s predecessor, Ty Robinson, served as Eagle AD and head football coach for nine years, and recently was named to the same title for the Crawford Pirates.

To assist with the process of finding Clawson, WISD retained the search firm Culwell Consulting.

Clawson, who has numerous playoff appearances with teams he has coached, as well as two state championship rings, “brings a high level of knowledge, skill and experience to the Woodville ISD athletic program,” Meysembourg said.
