TYLER COUNTY – Recently, the community came together to deliver some Christmas cheer to children and families Child Protective Services (CPS) serve.
CPS wanted to send a heartfelt thanks to Tyler County Farm Bureau, Newton and Tyler Counties Toys for Toys, Rita Ochs and Texas Department of Criminal Justice Gib Lewis Unit Warden, Brian Smith and employees for their generous toy donations.
Volunteers for the Rainbow Room had Santa Claus; festive hot chocolate and cookies for children to enjoy while unwrapping their gifts. “My heart is just so full of love for our community. We asked, they showed up and delivered,” said Shirley Harris, Rainbow Room volunteer.
CPS, which operates under the Department of Family Protective Services (DFPS) conducts investigations of abuse/neglected children and helps providing resources to families to mitigate abuse and neglect. Rainbow Rooms are 24/7 emergency resource rooms that provide basic needs to children and families during times of crisis, supported by donations and local volunteers. CPS caseworkers and investigators can get supplies in time of need for children who are victims of abuse or neglect. An individual, or as part of a corporation, church, or community group, can get involved and support the Rainbow Room. If you would like to volunteer or donate to the Rainbow Room, you may contact Shirley Harris (409)200-1163 or Elizabeth Jeffcoat by phone at (936) 234-0194 or email at elizabeth.jeffcoat@dfps.texas.gov
Rainbow Rooms can only accept new items. The Rainbow Wish List includes baby food, diapers, baby wipes, hygiene items (such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste), school supplies, toys and books, diaper bags and backpacks, children’s clothing, car seats, pack-n-plays and cleaning supplies.
