WOODVILLE – A planned street dance following Saturday night’s Western Weekend rodeo was cancelled, after the Woodville City Council opted to not approve a street closure for the event.
The Woodville City Council met in a special-called meeting on Monday evening. One of the items on the brief agenda was to consider for approval a street closure and noise variance for the event, which was being promoted as “After the Chute,” and scheduled for 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m on the downtown square. The event, which was being produced by Cypress and Creed, was to feature a performance by Spurger singer/songwriter Tyler Dozier and his Doin’ Time band.
“After careful consideration, the city has decided not to move forward with the event,” a statement from Cypress and Creed read. “While we were looking forward to bringing this tradition back, we respect the decision.”
A representative from the business said they will revisit the idea for the event next year during the Dogwood Festival season.
According to Section 26-1 of the City of Woodville’s ordinances, labelled “Noise; use of amplifying devices,” the city’s noise ordinance makes it “unlawful for any person to use or operate, or cause to be used or operated, any mechanical or electrical device, machine, apparatus or instrument to intensify or to amplify of to reproduce the human voice or any other sound…as to materially disturb a reasonable person, on any public street within the corporate city limits of the city.”
The city council has the right to issue permits, or variances, for “the use of loudspeakers or other sound-amplifying devices,” per the ordinance.
