KOUNTZE – Last Friday night, the Woodville Eagles made their way to Lion Stadium, southbound down US 69, to take on the Kountze Lions, and it was a close game that saw the Eagles come out on top 27-24.
The last time the two teams met, exactly a year prior to Friday’s game, the score was far more lopsided, with the Eagles coming out ahead 61-6.
Although this was the Lions’ fifth straight loss to the Eagles, the former team has had a banner year, compared to some, like in 2022, when they had a winless season. Friday night’s game decided the number two and three seeds in the playoffs for 3A-2 Region III District 12, with the Eagles in the number two spot and Kountze third.
The Eagles’ star QB Luke Babin had another impressive showing Friday night, as he threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns, and scored one on the ground, of his own. Senior Kenneth Rigsby picked up 93 yards off Babin’s passes, and one touchdown.
Rigsby led the Eagles, offensively, in receiving yards.
The team ran a total of 51 plays and had 13 first downs, with seniors Gage Tolar; Kevunte McDaniel and Dustin Barlow also adding to the scoreboard for the Eagles.
The Eagles are riding high on a series of three consecutive wins, and with Friday’s victory, they end the regular season with a 8-2 overall record and 5-1 district showing.
The Eagles will take on the West Rusk Raiders on Thursday in Nacogdoches at Dragon Stadium for the bi-district round of the playoffs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
