WOODVILLE – The magic of the Tyler County Fair is about to come through again, as it has since 1947 when it was established.
The fair is scheduled to run from Wednesday, Oct. 7 through Saturday, Oct. 10, and will showcase the talent and traditions of the county, and provide an opportunity for young and old, alike, to enjoy some fun on the carnival midway.
Sam’s Amusements is providing the midway entertainment, with a full complement of rides, including the Ferris Wheel, the Zipper and other thrilling attractions. Armbands this year to ride the rides are $30, and the rides will run during 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday during 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The Tyler County Fair has run annually since 1977, always taking place during the first full weekend of October, and while it has always been a showcase for the 4-H and Future Farmers of America members from across the county to showcase their livestock, crafts, woodworking and other projects, there is a new addition to this year’s offerings at the Tyler County Fairgrounds.
All of the FFA and 4-H members are encouraged to take part in the Ag Olympics at the fair on Thursday, Oct. 8. The event will include a farmer relay; pumpkin chunkin’; a quiz bowl and tug-of-war, among other activities, and it is open to all ages.
Organizers encourage everyone who can to test their skills and make memories while also representing their 4-H or FFA chapter. Participants need to complete and turn in the Ag Olympics wavier to the county extension agent or to their ag teacher. The Extension Office contact is Shannon Benton, who can be reached at Shannon.Benton@ag.tamu.edu, or by phone at 409-283-8284.
The events began for participants on Wednesday afternoon, with check-ins for lambs, goats and swine, and a broiler show at 8 p.m. Thursday will see judging for art and home economics projects, as well as the market lamb, goat and swine shows.
Among Friday’s events, the market steer show culminates the day, at 5:30 p.m., and Saturday will have the livestock auction at 7 p.m.
Along with the live auction sales, the county fairgrounds and rodeo arena will be alive with the smells of food vendors.
The Tyler County Fair Board encourages everyone to come out and support the youth of the county in their endeavors.
