PALESTINE – The Woodville Eagles continued to make history last Friday night in Palestine, and returned to their home turf as the lone team standing from Southeast Texas in the UIL football playoffs.
The Eagles advanced into the Class 3A-II state semifinals, and with Thursday’s game looming against Tidehaven, they are one step away from the state championship game, which will be held Dec. 19 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
First thing is first, though: the Eagles just made quick work of one team of Tigers (Daingerfield) in the quarterfinal round, and are set to take on another team of Tigers, this week from Tidehaven, for the semifinal round.
The 40-7 rout over Daingerfield was a huge victory of the Eagles. Senior Tayvion Hunter was on fire, scoring five touchdowns in the first half of the game, and with the Eagles up 30-0 at the half, Daingerfield was only allowed a TD near the end of the last quarter of play.
Despite Daingerfield’s decisive win over powerhouse Newton the week prior, they could not get anything over on the success-hungry Eagle team, aside from seven points near the end. Mutliple costly penalties in the first half killed any momentum the Tigers might have been able to obtain.
The Eagles have won seven games straight, all by an excess of 20 points, and bringing their overall record to 12-2.
The Tidehaven Tigers beat Lexington on Friday in their respective quarterfinal contest, 35-21.
Thursday’s game will be played at Randall Reed Stadium in New Caney.
Tickets to the game can be obtained online, via a link on the Woodville Athletics Facebook page, through the GoFan platform.
