WOODVILLE – Deputies with the Tyler County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man at Dogwood Trails Nursing Home after discovering an out-of-state warrant for the suspect.

According to Tyler County Sheriff Bryan Weatherford, the suspect, Austin Wilson Salazar, a 25-year-old Woodville man, was accused of stealing a resident’s cellphone. Weatherford said when a deputy confronted Salazar about the incident, the deputy learned that the man was wanted in Norfolk, Virginia for a crime that occurred there.

A search of public records from the Virginia Judiciary revealed a litany of misdemeanor offenses and arrests for Salazar, but a violation of a felony offense probation from Sept. 2025.

Weatherford said that when the deputy on the scene at Dogwood Trails attempted to place Salazar into custody, he resisted aggressively, and ran through the halls of the facility, attempting to hide in several different rooms.

When the deputy found him in the dining room, Salazar punched and kicked the deputy, Weatherford said. He added that some Dogwood Trails staff members attempted to help the deputy, and in the ensuing scuffle, Salazar punched a nurse and shoved her against a wall.

More TCSO deputies arrived on scene and were able to wrestle the suspect into custody. He was booked in Tyler County Jail, and charged with assault causing serious bodily injury; resisting arrest and evading arrest, as well as the parole violation from out-of-state. Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Tina Self set his bond at $95,000, and Weatherford said more charges are pending.
