The Spurger Lady Pirates traveled to Warren High School to play the Hull-Daisetta Lady Bobcats on Tuesday, May 4.
After the Lady Pirates’ #12 made quick work of the top of the first inning, it was time to bat. With bellied sails, the Lady Pirates zoomed across the bases with vigor.
Smash after smash, the ladies cruised around the diamond one base at a time. After #12 brought #11 home with a nice hit to left field, the Lady Bobcats seemed stompy; walking the next four out of five batters, and errored thrice, allowing nine total points to be loaded onto Spurger to close the first inning.
The second inning’s seas proved to be a bit choppier than the first’s, however, as the cats pounced back with purpose. They swarmed the bases with haste, and seemed to slacken the Pirates’ sails a bit, after one Lady Bobcat managed to clobber the ball to the back fence getting three feline runners over home plate.
On the next play, the Pirates errored and allowed a cat to steal home. Three more Lady Cats were able to get a piece of the rock, preceding a walk that got them yet another run in, closing the gap, and the end of the top of the second inning 9-6.
The Lady Pirates answered with finely trimmed sails, and a mission, in the bottom of the second inning briskly loading the bases with no outs. Then #7 took a direct hit to her ankle, but was able to walk it off, which yielded the first of many more points to come. #3 answered by firing a cannon ball to deep center field for a comfortable double. As ready as the next four Pirates were, three got walked and one was struck by the ball in the shoulder yielding Spurger yet more free points and pent up momentum.
The Lady Bobcats then switched pitchers which didn’t seem to alter the trajectory of the game even minutely. Directly, #11 hit a double to get two fellow Pirates home, followed by #1’s double-turned triple- and a well placed single base hit by #12 to get #1 the rest of the way home.
The next three batters either got hit or walked, adding even more points to the Lady Pirate’s docket. Although Hull-Daisetta was able to manage two more runs, it wasn’t enough to keep the third inning going. With an end game score of 26-8, the Lady Pirates are the semi-regional championship team.
This Thursday, they will take on the Moulton Kittens in the regional finals round. That game starts at 6 p.m., and will take place at Montgomery High School.
