The Lady Jackets softball team played a warm-up game against Apple Springs on Friday, April 17. Despite out hitting the Lady Eagles the Lady Jackets fell 1-5. Kennedi Wilson led with two hits, Allie Ogden had one hit, and Sadie Garsee had one hit. Harley Jones led in the circle giving up one hit and two runs over three innings. Jones struck out eight and walked four.
This week the Lady Jackets played Broaddus in Colmesneil on Tuesday, April 21 at 5:30 p.m for a Bi-District title. This game had not been played at press time.
‘Jackets clinch District Championship
The Yellowjacket baseball team sealed the District Championship with a 11-5 victory over Apple Springs on Friday, April 17. Jesse Bittick struck out 10 batters, surrendered three hits and three runs over six innings while walking six. The Jackets got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Rex Gilzow doubled, scoring two runs, Greyson Rosencranz grounded out, scoring one run, and an error scored one run. The Jackets added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after Jaxon Gay doubled, Turner Johnson hit a sacrifice fly, and Rosencranz singled down the left field line, each scoring one run. One run was added in the third after Johnson doubled. The Jackets piled up nine hits in the game. Gilzow provided pop in the middle of the lineup going 2-4 at the plate, and led with three runs batted in. Johnson, and Jayse Gay each collected two hits. Bittick stole two bases, Johnson, Bryson Swanson, and Weston Wiseman each stole one base.
After the win Coach Coleman Butter presented Jaxon Gay and Turner Johnson with a personalized bat signifying their 100th career hit accomplishment. The Seniors, Jesse Bittick, Jaxon Gay, and Rex Gilzow were also recognized, presented with gifts, and played a game of catch with their parents for one last time on Alex Johnson Memorial Field.
On Monday, April 20, the Jackets defeated Burkeville 17-2. Jaxon Gay went three for three with singles in the first and second inning, and a double in the fourth inning. The Jackets got on the board in the top of the first inning after a passed ball scored one run, Rex Gilzow singled, scoring one run, Bryson Swanson singled, scoring two runs, and one run scored on a balk.
The Jackets added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Gay singled, Turner Johnson hit a sacrifice fly, Greyson Rosencranz singled down the right field line, and Swanson singled down the left field line, each scoring one run.
In the top of the third inning Johnson singled to the right side of the infield, Jesse Bittick doubled to left field, Rosencranz singled to center field, and Swanson grounded out, each scoring one run. The Jackets piled up 11 hits in the game. Swanson led with four runs batted in from the number seven spot in the lineup. The left fielder went 2-for-3 on the day. Rosencranz collected two hits in four at bats. Henry David, Gay, Johnson, and Rosencranz each stole multiple bases.
Rosencranz led things off on the hill. The starting pitcher allowed zero hits and two runs over two-thirds of an inning. Johnson tossed two and two-thirds innings of no-run ball in relief. The southpaw allowed one hit, striking out five and walking four. The Yellowjackets will start their playoff run tentatively on April 29 with opponent and location to be determined.
Track team places second at Area meet
The Yellowjacket boys track team placed second in the Area meet held in San Augustine on Thursday, April 16. The 4x100 relay team took first and advanced to Regionals with Jesse Bittick, Kasen Citrano, Greyson Rosencranz, and Jaxon Gay.
The 4x200 also placed first with Bittick, Citrano, Gay, and Turner Johnson. The 4x400 relay team also advanced to Regionals with Bryson Swanson, Braysen Neal, Weston Wiseman, and Henry David. Individual runners who advanced to the Regional meet are Jaxon Gay in the 100-meter dash, Turner Johnson in the 200-meter, long jump, and triple jump, Henry David in the 400m, Ethan Gray in 110-meter hurdles, Kasen Citrano in shot put, and for the girls’ team, Allie Ogden advances in the discus. The Regional meet is May 1-2 in Seguin.
